Texans smoke each other out with their best rootin', tootin' chili. Bostonians stir it up with their famous New England clam chowder.

In Hawaii, residents and visitors slice the competition with a favorite local side dish called poke.

Professional and amateur chefs entered their recipes in four divisions for $6,000 in prizes Saturday at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

The Big Island's signature event in the statewide Aloha Festivals celebrates Hawaii's version of soul food. Unlike past competitions that focused heavily on presentation, taste reigned Saturday...

Aloha Festivals Hula Kaiko - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Performances
HULA KAHIKO SERIES

Volcano Art Center proudly presents its 25th year of hula kahiko performances at the pa hula at Ka'auea in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Since 1980, hula halau from around the state have made presentations at the stone platform, which is set aside for the perpetuation of traditional hula and chant. For cultural practitioners, gathering at this site and offering hula and chants while facing Halema'uma'u crater, the sacred home of the volcano goddess Pele, is especially meaningful. For spectators, experiencing the sounds and rhythms of ancient-style hula in the natural setting of Kilauea is authentic and quite extraordinary. By interpreting what is being chanted in the Hawaiian language, performers broaden the understanding of Hawaiian history and appreciation for Hawai'i's traditions for all present. These free outdoor performances are once-in-a-lifetime experiences for visitors, and memorable for those already familiar with this spirited art form.
